Free Motion Quilt with a Regular Sewing Machine at Home

This video covers everything you need to free motion quilt with a regular sewing machine!

First you need to have your quilt sandwich prepared either with basting spray, or with running stitch or safety pins. The Quilt sandwich is the backing fabric, batting and the top piece.

The video shows you how to use the basting spray as well. I haven’t used basting spray before but it looks fantastic! I usually pin but the basting spray looks really fast.

Great to practice and get comfortable with a pattern before doing it on your project. She uses the stipple pattern as the example. I need to get a special foot for my sewing machine called a darning foot or a machine quilting foot. You set the machine on a straight stitch but a bit longer than you might be expecting because it has to go through the width of the quilt.

At the end of the video is instructions if you want to have your machine quilting done by the Missouri Quilt Company. I’m a little far from Missouri! So I can check out the machine quilters in the directory here at Quilting Focus.

Tarnya is Quilting Focus' webmaster and a beginner quilter who hasn’t ventured much outside pre-cuts and quilting in the ditch. She is excited by modern short cut quilting techniques which makes quilting so much more achievable for those who are quite short on time. She enjoys making quilts for her children who she says do not notice mistakes and feel loved by what she makes. "I appreciate how learning and improving my quilting, cross pollinates into other creative areas of my life: for example colour, balance, proportion are important to quilting, but they are also important to web design."
