How to quilt a broken dishes pattern and much more…

I’ve just discovered the Man Sewing tutorials on youtube.
Every Monday Rob Appell hosts the show. I love Rob’s endangered species Art Quilts and his Colour Statra Designs.

I have embedded this tutorial to give you a taste: The Gears Quilt. Rob shows us

a cool steampunk twist on a traditional broken dishes pattern using Sizzix die cut appliques, and half square triangles made out of 10 inch squares of precut fabric.

Now I want a rotary cutter that cuts circles!

The Broken Dishes block is a classic traditional block made up entirely of half square triangles. It is suitable for a beginner like me and not as complicated as it looks. Rob gives clear instructions on how to quilt a broken dishes pattern block and gives a process for choosing of arrangement  of the finished blocks and selection of the pairing of the quilt fabric. Love!

There are lots of other tips that really make this quilt fabulous, but I’ll leave you to watch.

Here is the link ot the Free Template pdf and a list of supplies land.mansewing.com/gears-quilt. I’ve subscribed to the youtube channel.

About

Tarnya is Quilting Focus' webmaster and a beginner quilter who hasn’t ventured much outside pre-cuts and quilting in the ditch. She is excited by modern short cut quilting techniques which makes quilting so much more achievable for those who are quite short on time. She enjoys making quilts for her children who she says do not notice mistakes and feel loved by what she makes. "I appreciate how learning and improving my quilting, cross pollinates into other creative areas of my life: for example colour, balance, proportion are important to quilting, but they are also important to web design."
