How to sew hexagons using a half hexagon template

I recently made a  double hexagon quilt using a half hexagon template set. I love hexagons and fell in love with them when making hexagon flowers with my grandmother all hand sewn with paper. Now I really like being able to make those pattern fast and quick using modern techniques.

I love this tutorial from Jenny Doan from the Missouri Quilt Company which shows how to make a quick and easy adorable hexagon quilt using the Half-Hex Ruler. You can also purchase a similar template as part of the half hexagon template set from Carol’s Quilt which includes the small triangles to finish off the strips and some design hexagon graph paper.

Watch carefully how to join the seams for the half hexagons to get a nice straight edge for your strips. It took me a few goes to get this right so that when I sewed my strips together my hexagon looked right.

"I appreciate how learning and improving my quilting, cross pollinates into other creative areas of my life: for example colour, balance, proportion are important to quilting, but they are also important to web design."
